Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for the transfer of passengers and freight during helicopter operations
2. Access, interpret and apply documentation and procedures for Assisting in the transfer of passengers and freight during helicopter operations and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential hazards, risks and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate to the work activities
   • Resolve coordination requirements with others at the site prior to, during and on completion of work activities and ensure briefings/handover details are communicated
   • Confirm availability and status of necessary permits to work
   • Confirm availability of necessary auxiliary equipment
3. Prepare for helicopter landing
   • Conform to safe working practices and operational requirements
   • Prepare and make available, tools and equipment for safe and optimum use
   • Assemble freight and baggage for transportation
4. Load and unload helicopter
   • Communicate with relevant personnel before approaching the helicopter, to ensure safety of the team and passengers
   • Provide assistance in controlling the transfer of passengers
   • Assemble freight and baggage for transportation
5. Refuelling
   • Provide assistance during refuelling
   • Identify, report and record faults
   • Store refuelling equipment properly after use
6. Carry out helicopter ‘standby’ duties
   • Remain in a safe position on helipad
   • Monitor landing and take off
   • Report and record faults and implement corrective actions within functional responsibility
7. Prepare for helicopter departure
   • Store equipment safely and securely in designated location in accordance with operational requirements
   • Identify and report faults and take appropriate corrective action

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of assisting in the transfer of passengers and freight during helicopter operations including:

apply legislative, organisation and site requirements and procedures for assisting in the transfer of passengers and freight during helicopter operations

understand air regulations covering carriage of dangerous goods

apply refuelling procedures for vehicles, drill rigs and ancillary equipment

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the operation of assisting in the transfer of passengers and freight during helicopter operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:

resolving coordination requirements with others at the site prior to commencing and during work activities

preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

demonstrates completion of assisting in the transfer of passengers and freight during helicopter operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

preparing tools and equipment for use

assembling freight and baggage

controlling the transfer of passengers

monitoring landing and take off

safely approaching the helicopter
